Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease can be caused by second-hand smoke. A study funded by the National Institutes of Health-National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research analyzed 3255 self-reported lifetime non-smokers from 2009 to 2012. The non-smokers were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke, “ETS,” second-hand smoke. These people had 1.45 times the odds of moderate/severe periodontitis (gum disease) as compared with unexposed nonsmokers.
Each participant underwent a periodontal examination, the Heath, and Nutrition Examination Survey, and provided blood samples looking for serum cotinine, a metabolite of nicotine to classify exposure to ETS.
Forty-seven percent of people in the United States are affected by periodontitis. More investigation will be necessary to investigate serum cotinine and periodontitis in other non-smokers. The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that cigarette smoking is one of the causes.
