Dental Implant Misconceptions

Dental Implant Misconceptions –  Dental implants are becoming more and more common place to replace missing teeth.  However, there is a misconception that once dental implants are restored, they are indestructible.  Dental implants can fail.

Peri-implantitis is a bacterial lesion involving inflammation of gum tissue and bone loss around a dental implant.  It is an inflammatory disease process associated with bleeding, loss of supporting bone and dissolving gum tissues.

A variety of factors can affect the health of a dental implant;

1.  Diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis and other health issues

2.  Personal hygiene

3. Smoking

4. Bruxism, (grinding)

A dentist placing the implant can affect the health of a dental implant.

1.  Unnecessary cement left behind

2.  Implants placed in people with a history of periodontitis

3.  Premature placement of prosthetic  dental crown

4. Loose dental implant parts

Signs of failing dental implant for the dentist;

1.  Probing depths around the implant progression

2.  Bleeding tissue

3.  Swelling tissue

4. Color change of tissue

5. Plaque and calculus accumulation around the dental implant

6.  Radiograph showing loss of supporting bone

A failing dental implant may not be symptomatic, however the following may occur;

1.  A dull ache

2.  Bad taste in mouth

3. Tender to brush

Possible Treatment:

1. Stop the infection and reduce inflammation with mechanical debridement

2.  Localized medicine

3.  Improved hygiene

4. Systematic antibiotics

5. Surgery

Extensive bone loss may require the removing of the dental implant.  Alternative options to replace the missing tooth could be a fixed partial denture, dental bridges, partial dentures, etc.
